New to Windsor this year, the popular YO! Sushi franchise has opened a restaurant in Daniels department store. What a great concept! The food travels past diners on a conveyor belt from which you help yourself. Perfect if you’re in a rush, but if you have more time you can press your button to call for attention. Service is slightly chaotic but energetic and friendly and if you know what you like you can pretty much serve yourself anyway.
Seating is comfortable either at the bar or in booths of 4/5. Each station has its own still and sparkling water dispensers (£1.05 for a refillable glass), chopsticks, fresh ginger, soy and wasabi, together with tongs and spoons for the uninitiated. From wherever you sit you can see the food passing by – lethal as it all looks so good! We started with sushi, chicken dumplings and prawn tempura from the belt. Staff are attentive and keen to make recommendations or help you out if you’re a little baffled by the huge choice of dishes available. We ordered the chicken yakisoba, chicken teriyaki, prawn noodles and garlic beef. All delicious – served quickly and piping hot. You can even watch your dishes being prepared in the open kitchen, then grin smugly as your steaming food hits the conveyor belt and passes under the other diners’ noses on its way over to you. Great fun! We took our kids (aged 15 and 9) on our first visit and they loved it – tried lots of new dishes and greatly enjoyed the friendly and bubbly atmosphere.
The menu is clear to follow with pictures of all the dishes and helpfully they have put together “food bundles” to assist with decision-making. If you have no time to sit down you can purchase takeaway from a chiller cabinet, but you have to eat in at least once to experience the originality and atmosphere of Yo! Sushi. The décor is bold and bright and the location is superb for people- watching in Windsor town centre.
