Cliveden House
Cliveden
House, former home of Lady Astor, set in 376 acres on cliffs 200
feet above the Thames, is now a hotel, but its gardens are owned by
the National Trust, and are open to the public. The gardens comprise
a formal area and very extensive woodland with walks.
Cliveden is unique. One of the world’s finest luxury hotels,
this grand stately home is set in the heart of the Berkshire countryside,
surrounded by magnificent formal gardens and parkland. It is arguably
the finest of luxury hotels near London and Heathrow Airport. From
the moment you are ushered into the beautiful Great Hall with its
grand fireplace, oak panelling and priceless artworks, our aim is
to ensure you feel like a treasured, personal guest. You’ll
be treated to the very highest standards of quality, with excellence
in every detail. Where else can you be surrounded by such extraordinary
extravagance and remarkable refinement, but at the same time feel
so welcomed and at ease? Cliveden is, at heart, a charming country
house hotel where you can come away to escape, relax and be indulged
at every opportunity.
The house
itself is a grand Italianate mansion with a palpable sense of history.
For over three centuries it has been dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure,
power and politics and been called home by some of the most famous
names in English and American history, including three Dukes, the
Prince of Wales and, of course, the Astors.
Cliveden
is set amid 376 acres of magnificent formal gardens and parkland,
yet is still conveniently near to London and Heathrow Airport. The
chalk cliffs that give the estate its name, afford visitors to the
house panoramic views over the beautiful Berkshire countryside and
an idyllic bend in the River Thames.
Guests
have included every British monarch since George I as well as Charlie
Chaplin, Winston Churchill, Harold Macmillan, President Roosevelt,
George Bernard Shaw, John Profumo and Christine Keeler, and many other
well-known names from the past and present.
